The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This large canvas is unlined and maintains it original tacking edges. There is minor cusping along the upper edge. The canvas is stable on its stretcher. The paint layer is stable under a clear varnish, a fine craquelure is visible across the surface. Additional cracking and associated repairs follow the shape of the stretcher. Impastos on the shells and book pages are maintained. In natural light, a small vertical tear is visible in the background at upper center, measuring just under 2 inches. Around the tear small losses have also been repaired. A second small tear, measuring approximately 1 1/2 inches is visible in raking light just above the open book. There is restoration to sunken green pigments on the small shell resting on the book. The aforementioned repairs to fluoresce in ultraviolet light. Additional small touches of scattered restoration through out are also visible under a UV lamp. The painting presents well and is offered in a carved and gilt wood frame.
