This large painting is supported on the reverse by a glue lining and is secure on its stretcher. The paint layer is stable under a varnish that has yellowed slightly with age. A fine network of craquelure is visible across the surface and some of the impastos have been maintained. A tear is visible at upper right, measuring approximately 11 1/2 inches terminated at the side of the male sitter's face. Some overpainting in the boy's white collar is also visible in natural light. A second small oval-shaped hole is visible at upper left and measures 2 inched in diameter. Additional repairs scattered in the background can be seen in raking light. Inspection under ultraviolet light revealed scattered retouching in the sitter's hair and clothing, a small hole in the male sitter's proper right thigh and one just below his left foot, strengthening to the draped fabrics at lower right, and scattered repairs in the background. The painting presents well and can be displayed in its present state. The work is offered in a simple gilt wood frame.
