The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The paint surface and depth of colour appear to be in fine condition. This relined canvas retains a good tension on its stretcher; the general texture of the paint is somewhat uniform as a consequence of the lining treatment, although the painterly approach of the artist remains highly appreciable. A fine, stable pattern of craquelure is visible under close examination. There are some minor paint losses, predominantly to the borders, which may be attributed to rubbing from the frame. A slightly pronounced, vertical seam on the left side may be the result of pressing from an old stretcher bar. Examination under ultra-violet fluorescence reveals some historic strengthening to the cloudy sky on the right, some other strengthening to the darker flowers and the shadow beneath the stone’s edge. An aged varnish to the background impairs further examination. Despite this, the wealth of fine details and the broad tonality of the flowers are still highly appreciable. The carved and gilded frame is in very good condition.
