This relined canvas is held under tension and remains stable. Paint shrinkage is visible in the background around the sitter, which has been in-filled. The relining treatment has resulted in a flattening of the paint layer, however the artist's expressive brushwork remains appreciable, particularly in the sitter's features. Further overpainting is visible in the blue of the sitter's coat and elsewhere. Ultraviolet examination confirms the above and reveals a thick, aged varnish that prevents further assessment.
