The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This large canvas is supported on the reverse by a glue lining. There is slight cusping along the left edge. The paint layer is stable, under a clear varnish. A fine craquelure is visible across the surface; there are minor frame abrasions at the extreme edges, which are hidden by the rabbet of the frame. In natural light, minor restorations along the craquelure are visible scattered throughout the composition. A 1-inch area of restoration is visible in natural light over the sitter's proper right hip. Inspection under UV light revealed a delicately restored 2-inch circular hole at upper right in the tree. Further inspection under ultraviolet light revealed an overall campaign of feathered brushstrokes, which address the wide weft and weave of the canvas throughout. The painting presents well overall and is offered in a carved and giltwood frame.
