Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been relined and retains a strong tension at the present time. The general texture of the paint is somewhat uniform as a consequence of the lining treatment, although there are remains of energetic impasto brushwork in some details. Close examination reveals a fine pattern of stable craquelure which does not distract from the modelling. Examination under ultra-violet fluorescence reveals some individual flecks of retouchings, predominantly to the background but also to the lower edge of her shawl and strengthening the outlines of her eyes and the plait in her hair. There is a restored hole to the background in the upper right with associated retouchings. Despite this, the artist’s painterly technique remains highly appreciable. The frame is in very good condition.
