The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is executed on panel comprised of a single board with a vertical grain. The panel has been supported on the reverse by two horizontal batons, which have been inserted into channels. A third channel is visible on the lower part of the board. The panel has suffered from insect damage, however the panel is stable, with no evidence of active insects. There are a few vertical cracks the longest of which measures 15 1/2 inches emanating from the upper right and terminating just below the Virgin's waist as seen in the catalogue image. Further sort carks are also visible in Saint Joseph's cloak and over the Christ Child's arm and torso.
The paint layer is stable, although slightly dirty, under a varnish that has yellowed in some areas. There is an uneven craquelure across the surface. A campaign of older restorations throughout has discolored with age and is visible in the catalogue image. These restorations are visible in ultraviolet light. Further inspection with a UV lamp is hindered by an opaque varnish. The work is offered in a carved, painted and gilt wood frame.
