Lot Essay

Giambono di Corrado da Ragusa, born in Dubrovnik, a city that had close trade links with the Marches from the twelfth century, is documented as the closest follower of Olivuccio di Ceccarello, an artist active in Ancona from 1388 to 1439. The details of Giambono’s artistic career are scarce: he is first mentioned in 1442 in discussions over the project to decorate the church of Saint Augustine in Norcia, and his work as a painter has largely been established from the frescoes showing Scenes from the life of Saint Benedict in the church of Santa Scolastica at Norcia, where he is documented in 1443, and those in the church of Santa Maria della Misericordia at Castelferretti near Ancona.
