The Madonna and Child with Saints Francis and Claire

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The panel is made up of one soft-wood board. Two supporting battons have been affixed horizontally to the upper and lower thirds of the panel. There is evidence of historic woodworm to the panel; this is no longer active. A couple of the holes are visible to the recto of the panel. There a minor vertical split of approximately 15 cm. in length extending from the centre of the upper edge. There is a minor vertical split of approximately 10 cm. extending up from the centre of the lower edge. These are not noticeable to the front of the panel. There is a hairline split of approximately 60 cm. that extends from the upper edge of the panel down through the face of Saint Claire, which can be seen in natural light. The panel remains stable.
The painting presents well in natural light, with the modeling of the faces and hair well preserved. There is some minor cracking in the paint surface due to an historic straightening of the panel (likely at the moment when the transverse battons were added to the reverse.) There is some minor scattered retouching, mostly associated with these hairline cracks. Examination under UV light confirms this. The paint remains stable.
