The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The delicacy of the drawing and modelling and the subtleties of colour and tonal gradation are preserved in the present painting. It has an harmonious, if slightly cloudy appearance. The cradled panel is held under tension and remains stable. Examination in a natural light reveals horizontal cracks in the panel to the lower right as a result of the straightening of the panel after cradling. There has been some thinning to the upper paint glazes. There is extensive scattered restoration in the sky which has resulted in some discolouration. Isolated paint losses are visible along some of the cracks such as in the centre right. Historic abrasion of the dark glazes is visible in elements such as the trees in the left quadrant and in the foreground. Further isolated restoration is visible in raking light. Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned restorations and reveals further scattered restoration throughout. There is a thick layer of varnish that precludes further examination.
