The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel is made up of three boards, vertically joined. The panel appears to be structurally sound. The reverse of the panel is covered by a protective layer and was not examined. The panel may have been cut down slightly at the top edge.
Examination in natural light reveals some wear to the darker tones of his clothes and to the background. Ultra-violet fluorescence examination reveals restoration along the two vertical panel joins and along two other panel splits which have been stabilised. There are other flecks of restoration throughout, including two passages of retouchings to the background at the top, some retouchings to areas of his ruff and to his right hand and the outline of his drapery has been reinforced. The gold chain and medal may have been added after the portrait was finished.
This painting has an even surface gloss. It remains stable and in good condition. The Dutch frame is in a good state of preservation.
