The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This large canvas is supported on the reverse with a glue lining and is stable on its structure. A canvas seam is visible at right running through the sitters proper left arm. The paint layer is stable although slightly dirty under a clear varnish. There is an uneven craquelure along the surface. In raking light a small hole in the sitters proper right cheek is visible with associated repairs. Further repairs along the craquelure and to small tears in the background are also visible. Scattered restorations to the craquelure in the flesh tones are visible under raking light. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals a campaign of restoration. There are further restorations along the canvas seam in the dark background and to the table cloth. The painting can be hung in its current state and is offered in a monumental frame.
