The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This relined canvas is held under tension and remains stable. The original canvas has been laid down on a new a canvas. In raking light, the paint layer appears to be in a very good state of preservation, with the highest passages of the original impasto still visible, although largely flattened due to the relining. Ultraviolet examination reveals some restoration along the top edge of the canvas, as well as along the left-hand side and the lower centre in the whites, with some scattered strokes of restoration in the darker tones, such as in the shadows of the tree branches and the putti in the lower left. The artist’s technique remains highly appreciable and the painting appears to be in a good state of presentation.
