The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This large canvas is supported by a glue lining and is slightly slack, although stable, on its stretcher. The paint layer is stable, yet dirty, under a varnish that has yellowed with age. There are some scattered white marks, as seen in the catalogue image, caused by surface dirt, which could be removed by a conservator. A network of fine craquelure is visible across the surface. Broad areas of restoration to the sky and background elements are visible in raking light. Further restorations to the birds, specifically the goose, rooster, and pigeon at lower center, have also been broadly restored. These restorations, as well as additional strokes of strengthening and small repairs to losses along the craquelure are visible in natural light. The painting presents well and can be offered in its present state, but could benefit from the removal if the surface dirt. The painting is offered in a large painted and giltwood frame.
