The painting is executed on a uniformly thin sheet of copper that has become slightly uneven with age. The copper sheet is supported on the reverse by a wooden cradle, which is mostly detached from the copper plate. The work, however, is still stable in its frame. The paint layer is stable, yet dirty, under a varnish that has become clouded in some areas over time. A fine craquelure is visible across the surface, especially in the darkest tones. Some of the pigments, especially the blues have degraded over time as seen in the catalogue image. Losses are visible along the extreme edges, and smaller losses can be seen scattered throughout, some of which have not been retouched. There is a white substance on the surface of the painting at lower center, which could likely be removed with careful cleaning. Inspection under ultraviolet light revealed a campaign of restorations to the dark background and to scattered small losses. Further inspection is hindered by an uneven varnish. The painting can be hung in its present state and is offered in a Dutch-style frame.
