The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This set of four each have an old, discoloured varnish; close examination suggests that a sensitive clean would significantly benefit them and reveal a much lighter tonality. The paint layers appears to be in good condition. Each canvas has been subject to relining and retain a good tension on their stretcher. Examination under raking light reveals the presence of some textured impasto brushwork that remains appreciable. One painting has several paint losses, predominantly to the edges; another has two paint losses to the bottom edge; the other two have very minor paint losses that are only apparent on close inspection. Examination under ultra-violet fluorescence is impaired by the varnish, but there appears to be some historic retouchings to each, predominantly in the darker passages, and some fine retouchings along the pattern of craquelure to each. The contemporary Roman frames are each in very good condition with a few minor losses.
