Lot Essay

Though sold twice in the early twentieth century with an attribution to Daniel Seghers, Marie-Louise Hairs recognized this complete set of allegories of the Four Seasons as the work of Johannes Fijt and published them as such in her seminal Les peintres flamands de fleurs au XVIIe siècle (loc. cit.). This series can be compared with a similar painting of a cartouche surrounded by flowers that is signed and dated 1643 in an American private collection.

‌We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer for endorsing the attribution on the basis of photographs and for his kind assistance cataloguing this lot.
