The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The single-piece oak panel is bevelled to each edge. Along the left hand edge (as visible on the reverse), three insets, one of 15 cm. in length and the other two of 7 cm., have been laid into the panel. Seen in natural light, the depth of the composition and the energy of application are immediately evident. There is a hairline crack of 7 cm. that corresponds with the upper inset visible in the upper right-hand edge. Similarly, there is a restored crack of 8 cm. visible in raking light corresponding to the lowest panel inset. There is some slight frame abrasion to the very edge of the panel. Examination under UV light reveals scattered retouching, predominantly in the sky along the hairline craquelure associated with the grain of the panel. There is a slightly cloudy varnish that precludes further examination.
