The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is executed on an oval shaped panel comprised of a single board of a horizontal grain. There is evidence of hand beveling along the rounded edge and dormant worm holes along the lower center, some of which are visible in on the painted surface and have been restored. There is a small crack measuring 2 inches at upper left, that has also been restored. The paint layer is stable under a dirty varnish that has yellowed with age. Areas of paint in the sky have thinned revealing the priming layers below, as is seen in many Dutch landscapes, thin strokes of inpainting have been applied in this area to minimize the wood grain. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirmed these restorations and revealed fine strokes of strengthening have been applied throughout the composition. The painting can be hung in its present state, but its appearance could greatly benefit from a surface cleaning and the application of a fresh varnish.
