The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The original canvas has been relined, this is held under tension and remains stable. The painting presents well in natural light, with the swift lines of the composition well preserved. Examination in raking light shows retouching to the sky, a retouched damage below the deer, and a surface scratch to the centre of the composition. The paint layer is stable. UV light inspection confirms the aforementioned retouchings. Further examination is impaired by a selectively cleaned varnish.
