A flower seller
The canvas has been relined and retains a good tension on its stretcher. The wealth of narrative detail, the tonal range and the artist’s fluid technique remain appreciable throughout the composition. There is a small area in the background immediately to the right of the bunch of flowers which appears to show discoloured retouching and there is a small damage to the stone bench with some associated losses. Examination under ultra violet light is obscured by the varnish layer but other than some very minor spots of retouching to her forehead, there is little evidence of restoration.
The pretty gardener
The canvas been relined and retains a good tension on its stretcher. Like its pendant, the narrative detail and tonal range remain appreciable throughout. There is evidence of discoloured retouching in the lower section of the lady’s dress. Examination under ultra violet light confirms the aforementioned restoration and reveals some further retouching to the sitter’s head and strengthening to the stone pedestal beneath the duck and section of sky next to her let arm.
