Jeanne-Philiberte Ledoux was one of the leading female artists of the revolutionary and Napoleonic eras. Daughter of the celebrated architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux (1736-1806), she entered the studio of Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805) to train as a painter at a time when few women dared venture into a public profession. She drew inspiration for her own paintings from the works popularised by her master, principally producing head studies of beautiful young women and children. This intimate portrait is characteristic of Ledoux’s ‘expressive heads’, which she exhibited to considerable success in the Paris Salons from 1793 until 1819.

This portrait presents very well in natural light, with the painterly approach to execution and the freshness of the composition well preserved. The panel has been cradeled to the reverse and the vertical cradeling has been affixed to an external wooden addition of 1cm. in width that encircles the whole composition. This is not visible when framed. The panel is stable. In a raking light some minor retouching can be seen in the background to the left of the sitter. Examination under UV light reveals more extensive retouching in the background to the left of the sitter. There is some further minor scattered retouching to the face and hair and the right-hand edge. The paint remains stable.
