The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been relined and retains a good tension on its stretcher. The paint surface is stable and the picture presents well overall. The rich textured brushwork, notably that employed in the figure of William Scott, is very well preserved and the wealth of narrative detail remains appreciable throughout. A number of pentimenti are visible in the horse's reins.
Examination under ultraviolet light reveals widespread retouching in the sky with some also to the landscape. Both horses and figures appear to be in fine original condition with only a very few minor isolated spots of retouching.
The gilt composition frame is in good condition.
