The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been relined and retains a strong tension at the present time. The general texture of the paint is fairly uniform as a consequence of the lining treatment, although the textured brushwork of the artist remains appreciable. Close examination in natural light reveals some minor wear to the paint layers and a fine, stable pattern of craquelure in places. There is a repair to a small damage to the landscape above the tail of the central horse. Examination under ultra-violet fluorescence reveals some minor strengthening to the outlines of the horses, some passages of retouching to the darker tones of the landscape background and to areas of the foliage in the upper right. The gilded wood frame is in very good condition.
