The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This relined canvas retains a strong tension on its canvas and is in stable condition. The relining treatment has resulted in a slight loss to the impasto, although the artist's bold and fluid brushstrokes remain noticeable. Inspection under raking light reveals an even craquelure. There are a few minor scuffs to the edges of the picture as expected. There is some slight wear to the darker tones of the trees and hedges, although the landscape is still highly legible. Inspection under ultra violet fluorescence reveals a vertical restored tear to the sky and a section of the trees in the centre. There are also a few individual small specks of retouching throughout and more sustained retouchings along the outer border where an old frame may have covered the picture previously. Overall, the paint surface is in a very good state of preservation.
