Lot Essay

Joseph Paelinck began studying painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, and exhibited for the first time at the Ghent Salon in 1802. Shortly after he left for Paris where he was admitted to the studio of Jacques-Louis David. While in the David studio he completed a Judgement of Paris, which won the fist prize at the Ghent salon. Paelinck only briefly experimenting with the then popular Romantic late in his career.
