The canvas has been relined and retains a good tension on its stretcher. There is some surface dirt but the picture presents well overall and the wealth of narrative detail remains appreciable throughout the composition.
Examination under ultraviolet light reveals restoration to an old repaired irregular tear in the trunk of the tree (upper left) and scattered strengthenings to the darker tones. Apart from some outline strengthening to the bird in the upper centre of the composition, there is little evidence of restoration to the birds and fruit.
There are some losses to the gilt composition frame.
