The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
These four relined canvases retain a good tension on their stretcher with the drawing, modelling and wealth of detail appearing generally well preserved in each painting. Each has an even and stable surface with very minor scratches and marks, which are hardly visible to the naked eye. Ultra-violet fluorescence examination reveals a few isolated strokes of retouching to each painting, although the layer of varnish may disguise a second level of restoration. There has evidently been some strengthening to the darker tones in the foreground of some of the paintings. Labels to the reverse of each frame state that they were cleaned in February 1989.
