The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas would appear to be unlined. The canvas is uneven in places, notably in the corners, and there is a pattern of craquelure. There is some slight tenting in the upper right corner, which may need to be addressed in the future. There are a few minor losses near the lower edge, and two horizontal creases, which run through the skull; this indicates that the canvas may have been folded in the past.
The varnish has yellowed and somewhat degraded, and the surface is dirty. The examination under UV light is largely impeded by the varnish but the brushwork in the face and hands remains well preserved, with areas of impasto.
