The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The delicacy and painterly approach to face and costume remain well preserved in this portrait. In a raking light a vertical passage of slight tenting can be seen down the left edge of the painting; this remains stable for the time being. There is some further evidence of a tendecy towards slight lifting in the background to the right of the sitter. There is an area of restoration above the sitters plumes, and some further scattered restoration, notably in the lower left and right corners. The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. Examination under UV light confirms these observations. The feigned oval has been strengthened.
