The upper panel of the painting appears to have been laid down on a more fibrous panel; it is possible that there is some form of canvas or linen interlay between them. The panel is slightly bowed at each side, although it is uncradled and secure within its current frame. Examination under raking light reveals the painting surface still has some of its original bold impasto highlights, although there is some wear to the darker tones of the background. There is an old repaired dent in between Christ's knees, another to the upper right hand corner and an untouched dent to Christ's right hand. There is a very minor paint loss in the handkerchief held by Mary. With some small flecks of discoloured retouchings; inspection under ultra violet fluorescence is inconclusive but suggests there are a few minor passages of old retouching in the lower right corner around Christ's legs and the wicker basket. It is in very good and stable condition overall.
