The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel is stable and providing good support for the picture. There is a pattern of craquelure to the paint surface, with a discoloured varnish.
On close inspection, and in natural light, the picture surface is uneven. Old, discoloured retouching/restoration can be seen throughout the composition; this seems to be associated with historic paint lifting and areas of loss, and it has led to a loss of definition and clarity in the much of the background and sky. In the lower left corner there is a small area of discoloured retouching that is lifting to form a ‘bubble’ on the surface. Whilst the picture is stable, its appearance and clarity may be improved by careful restoration.
The examination under UV light shows small spots of scattered retouching; the older, historic restoration does not fluoresce but is visible is natural light.
