The Madonna and Child

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The painting has been executed on a single piece soft-wood panel; this has slightly bowed, resulting in some small fault lines in the panel. There is evidence on the reverse of old woodworm. There is no evidence of live woodworm. The panel remains structurally stable. In a raking light there is evidence of some repainting in the blues of the Madonna's cloak and in the flesh tones, notably in the face of the Child. There are some small losses to the gold on the left hand side. Examination under UV light confirms the aforementioned restoration. There are several repaired faults to the panel, notably: one of approximately 30 cm. that runs vertically through the Child, one of approximatey 25 cm. that runs vertically down from the Madonna's proper right shoulder, one of approximately 15 cm. that runs vertically down from the Child's tummy button, and one of approximately 12 cm. that runs vertically down the left side of the Madonna's neck. There are further scattered retouchings to the figures. Due to a cloudy varnish it is difficult to discern the extent of the repainting in the cloak. It is probable that there is further repaintng to the figures and the gold ground that would need a more in depth investigation to reveal. The paint remains stable. The modeling of the figures remains crisp and the painting presents well in natural light.
