The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Close examination of this relined canvas reveals that although the paint layer is worn, the drawing, tone and colour balance in the modelling of the figure remains in a good state of preservation. There is a puncture in the canvas in the centre left (visible in the illustration), as well as another, visible in the wrist of the hand holding the fan. Ultraviolet examination reveals an old, streaky layer of degrading varnish, with infilling in some of the craquelure and damages in the centre left of the background. There appears to be further historic restoration in the flesh tones. Cleaning would prove rewarding in restoring clarity overall.
