Mattia Preti was born in Taverna, Napels to a patrician family. Around 1630 Mattia left his hometown to join his brother, Giorgio, a well-connected painter in Rome. Paintings produced in the brothers’ Roman studio are sometimes confused, such as the present painting which has been identified as belonging to both Mattia and Gregorio’s oeuvres. The execution of the foreshortening across the Silversmith’s back, realistic and dramatic lighting effects places the work among Mattia’s earliest works.

This painting is executed on canvas which has been supported on the reverse by a clear plastic lining. The painting is secure, and mounted quite stiffly, on its support. The paint layer is stable, although slightly dirty, under a clear varnish. The paint layer is stable and there is an uneven craquleure across the surface. The weft and weve of the canvas has become pronounced, this has affected the surface in some areas. In natural light broad restorations to the dark background, the back of the silversmith's jacket, and to the forge are visible. These restorations were confirmed via inspection under ultraviolet light. Further restorations to the sitter's clothes, hair and the background at right attempt to close the widening spaces between the weft and weave of the canvas and losses. The painting can be hung in its present state. This work is offered unframed.
