The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel has additions of approximately 1.5 inches on the upper and lateral edges which appear to be later in date. These have begun to separate over time resulting in cracking and losses along the joins, most notably in the upper and lower right corners and in halo of the Madonna. There is a crack in the panel, most likely along a join, visible on the face of the panel running from the center of the lower edge up through that sleeve of the Madonna as visible in the catalogue image. There are further losses in the lower section beneath Christ’s feet and in the robe of John the Baptist in the lower left section, with two larger losses at the center and right side of the lower edge.
Inspection under UV reveals extensive retouching through the limbs of Saint John and the Christ child and further retouching scattered throughout. Offered in an elaborate tabernacle frame with carved angels and seraphim.
