The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is executed on a panel comprised of three horizontally oriented boads, which have separated slightly over time. The panel is supported on the reverse by three horizontal batons. Wooden batons have been added along the extreme edges to fit the frames, bring the overall measurements to 291⁄4 x 223⁄4 in. (74.2 x 57.6 cm.). The right most board has bowed slightly with age, and there is eveidence of dormant insect burrows on the reverse. The other boards are not affected by the bow. The paint layer is slightly dirty under a layer of varnish. There is a craquelure across the surface, with additional cracking and associated losses along the panel joins and at the extreme edges. Retouching along the panel joins and craquelure is visible in natural light. Inspection under ultraviolet light revealed addition retouches along the wood grain throughout, and retouching to the darkest areas of the composition. An opaque varnish hindered further inspection under ultraviolet light. The painting can be hung in its present state, but could be marginally improved by readdressing the losses along the panel joins. The work is offered in an ornately carved wooden frame.
