The general composition of this deeply expressive painting is reminiscent of the group of figures in a Lamentation ascribed to Adriaen Isenbrandt in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp. There are marked similarities in the position of the three figures, the background view and the way in which Saint John's hand is placed on Christ's head. A comparable arrangement of figures in the space, although not with these poses, can be found in Gerard David's Lamentation in the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

This painting is executed on a panel comprised of a single board of a vertical grain. The panel has bowed slightly with age but is stable. The reverse of the panel is covered in a dark paint layer. The painted surface is stable with a fine craquelure. In natural light repairs along the extreme edges and areas in the foreground are visible. Scattered repairs along the craquelure fluoresce under ultra violet light. A small loss in one of the three Mary’s red garments has been restored. Further inspection under ultra violet light reveals scattered pinpoint restorations through. The painting presents well and is offered in a small wood carved frame.
