This painting is supported by a glue lining on the reverse and is stable on its stretcher. A seam in the canvas at the right edge of the painting is visible. The paint layer is clean under a clear varnish. There is an uneven craquelure across the surface. At the extreme edges frame abrasions and associated repairs are visible, these are hidden by the rabbet of the frame. In natural light a white substance over the face and shoulder of Hercules is visible, as seen in the catalogue image. Repairs along the craquelure are visible in raking light. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirmed the aforementioned repairs. The painting presents well and is offered in a carved and giltwood frame.
