The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This relined canvas retains a good and stable tension on its stretcher. Examination under raking light reveals the paint surface to be in a good state of preservation with the creamy impasto of Flora’s drapery and of the flowers in the lower right to be particularly well preserved. With some old damages, including a circular paint loss to the mirror, a minor repaired crack to the upper right and lower left, two repaired areas to the right of Flora’s head with some associated retouchings and unstable paint and a repaired tear above her right shoulder. Some tenting to the craquelure which would benefit from being consolidated. With some small flecks of discoloured retouching throughout. Inspection under ultra violet fluorescence confirms these and reveals infill to the old craquelure. Despite this, the bold colouring and fluid brushstrokes of the artist are still highly appreciable.
