The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting remains stable. It has an harmonious appearance though lacks sharp clarity on close inspection. The single piece poplar panel maintains its original thickness and, with the exception of very minor historic woodworm activity, appears unaltered. It has a comfortable convex warp to the front and a few historic, stable vertical cracks; it remains structurally stable. The drawing and narrative detail remain in a reasonable condition. There are numerous, microscopic, pitted losses across the surface and a degree of general abrasion overall. Scattered retouching and isolated spots of minor restoration are visible across the surface. Ultra-violet fluorescence examination reveals an even layer of relatively recently applied varnish with all retouching beneath it.
