The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS CONDITION REPORT WAS PREPARED BY HAMISH DEWAR, AN INDEPENDENT PAINTINGS CONSERVATOR
Overview
The painting would appear to be in reasonably good and stable condition and the extent of retouchings applied in the past should be noted. No further work is required for reasons of conservation.
Structural Condition
The canvas has an old lining which is still ensuring a sound structural support and has successfully secured the pattern of fine lines of slightly raised drying craquelure which are stable and are most evident within the pale pigments of the background and the whites of the tablecloths.
Paint Surface
The paint surface has an even varnish layer. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows quite extensive retouchings within the pale
background and in particular in the upper right of the background above and between the various leaves. There are also retouchings within the leaves themselves, including lines highlighting the contours, and an area measuring approximately 5 x 5 cm just above the leaves on the left of the composition with concentrated retouchings around the glass to the right of the leaves. There are further retouchings on the larger glass in the centre of the composition and comparatively few retouchings on the details of the still life and similarly only minimal retouchings on the whites of the table cloths with the exception of one area in the lower right corner which measures approximately 5 x 2 cm. There are other scattered retouchings and there may be further retouchings that I could not identify under ultraviolet light.
