Lot Essay

Richard Rochfort was the second son of Robert Rochfort, 1st Earl of Belvidere. In 1764 he married Letitia Richardson, daughter of James Mervyn, and changed his name to Mervyn in accordance with her family's wishes (and possibly to distance himself from his ownfamily drama - see essay for lot 188). As well as serving as Lieutenant Colonal of the 35th Regiment of Foot, Rochfort was also MP for Philipstown, in King's County (now County Offaly), Ireland, from 1761-1768.

Please refer to lot 190 for further information on the artist and the Rochfort family.
