The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been relined and retains a strong tension on its stretcher. The highest impasto brushwork remains appreciable though the general texture of the paint is uniform as a consequence of the lining treatment. There appears to be discoloured retouchings to her neck, to the background on the left edge and in the sky; ultra-violet fluorescence examination seemingly confirms this and reveals traces of an aged varnish remaining in the darkest passages. There are some restorations such as to her nose, to passages of the eagle and the inscription in the lower left appears to have been strengthened. There is a further scheme of sensitively applied flecks of retouching applied to reduce the appearance of the craquelure and to strengthen the linear detail. The carved frame is in good condition with some localised discolouration to the paint.
