The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This two-piece oak panel is cradled on the reverse and remains even and stable. A vertical panel join is visible across the centre of the panel, with paint shrinkage across the thicker impasto layers of the browns, particularly in the woman's cloak and headdress. There is historic abrasion of the thinner glazes in the background and the woman's clothes, with lines of strengthening in the shadows of her face, and two small isolated damages in the center left. The hands and the face remain highly appreciable and in a good state of preservation. Ultraviolet examination confirms the above and reveals lines of restoration across the panel grain in the background. The remains of the signature (with the complete date) in the lower left suggest that the left side of the panel may have been cut in the past.
