The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
THIS REPORT HAS BEEN PREPARED BY AN OUTSIDE RESTORER
This painting remains stable and in a remarkable condition. The integrity of the artist’s technique appears intact.
Support:
The single piece panel remains even and structurally stable. It has one chamfered edge on the right side [verso]. The upper edge appears comparatively rough and could suggest that the artist cut a larger panel down in order to create this work.
Paint layer:
Close examination confirms the drawing, fluid texture of the painterly brushwork and every element of the composition to be well preserved. There is a loss of sharp clarity due to slight surface abrasion, aged varnish and strengthening across the foreground. Cleaning would prove rewarding in restoring a tonal balance and in revealing the gradations of colour and tone in the trees and foreground.
Varnish:
Ultra-violet fluorescence examination reveals a thick layer of aged varnish with minor strokes of retouching scattered across the surface. There is no recent retouching.
Frame:
The carved and gilded frame has a large loss to the central upper edge.
