The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This panel is a fragment of a larger work and appears to have has been recently restored. It is inset into a new panel and remains stable. Ultraviolet examination reveals restoration to two large, vertical parallel cracks that run through the centre of the panel. Running through a part of the sitter’s face, they do however miss the main portions of his features (centre of the eyes, lips and nose) and rather run alongside the right eye and through the cheek. A large restoration at the top of the cracks is visible and further extensive restoration is visible along the lower edge of the panel. There are a few other small areas of isolated restoration. The artist’s painterly technique and masterful application of paint remains highly appreciable and presents very well overall.
