The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This large canvas is supported on the reverse by a glue lining. The paint layer is stable, although slightly dirty, under a varnish that has yellowed with age. There is an uneven craquelure across the surface and additional cracking corresponding to the stretcher bar. A campaign of restorations along the extreme edges addresses frame abrasion and associated losses. In natural light restorations to the face and turban of the man furthest to the left are visible, as well as scattered throughout the the figures. Restorations to the sky and to the landscape are visible in natural light and fluoresce under ultraviolet light. Loses in the blue caped figures’ ear, the central figure in red’s neck and beard, and to the wrist of the bending figure at far right have been retouched, these retouches also fluoresce under ultraviolet light. There is a horizontal line of restoration to the edge of the altar at lower center, just to the right of the pear. The faint lettering on the handing scroll has been strengthened slightly. The painting presents well overall and is offered in a carved frame with a gilt wood sightline.
