The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting is on a canvas support; it is held under tension and remains stable. Examination in natural light shows some very minor scattered retouching above the sitter’s head and in the background to the left, as well as in the blacks of his costume. The paint is stable. Examination under UV light reveals the painting to be in good condition overall. There is the remains of an old varnish in scattered patches. It confirms the aforementioned minor retouchings. The painterly approach to execution is well preserved.
