The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is executed on canvas, which has been supported on the reverse by a glue lining. The painting is stable on its support. Additional wooden strips have been added along the edges to fit the work to its frame. Slight cusping is visible along the upper edge. The paint layer is stable and there is a fine craquelure across the surface. In natural light an old hole, which has been delicately restored, is visible over the stem of the artichoke. Further restorations to the quince, parrot, and background are also visible. The is some abrasion to the area around the parrot's beak and to the tops of the asparagus, as seen in the catalogue image. Inspection under ultraviolet light revealed a campaign of restoration to the background, parrot, table, and vegetable. The painting presents well and and is offered in a carved and giltwood frame.
